Opening Post from John

Well, OK. Tim Allik suggested that I start this blog and daughter Julie set me up so here I am. I hope that you will visit often and add your comments when moved to do so.

After two weddings in a row, one might think that things would be slower here but the converse is true. It is busier now than ever. The boys arrive Saturday!

Fred Lorber got here Monday and immediately cranked things up a notch with his energy and enthusiasm. Matt Oberg, a 20-year-old Silver Lake resident, joined us Tuesday and will be a huge asset as counselor. He plays guitar, was a competitive swimmer, knows his way around a woodshop and I suspect has other talents waiting to be discovered. Add Sibelle Ewing as our chef and Julie as the administrator there is a good team for this inaugural season of the third iteration of Camp Choconut.

Yesterday we walked around the lake scouting places to camp and discussing projects for the boys. I'll save news of our plans for another post. Enough to say that we will have a combination of small projects and a couple of larger, team projects. The larger projects are a combination of temporary structures and building improvements.

OK, I'm off to make coffee. I woke at 5 this morning, too excited to sleep. My head is filled with things to do. I had so much energy yesterday after working 12 hours that I did my first dock-to-dock swim. I seems only fitting that the Director and lifeguard be able to the trip.

I'll see if I can get Fred and Matt to post here with their impressions and I hope Julie will continue. I'll also see about getting the small contingent of alumni coming to camp for the annual Cemetery Association meeting to share their impressions.

Best,
John

Recent activity at Camp Choconut

With the re-opening of Camp Choconut rapidly approaching, the staff is hard at work getting ready for the arrival of our 5 campers and CA on Saturday. The Camp is looking good, due to the combined efforts of volunteer alumni, members of the two weddings that were held here, and the staff. The weddings that were held here were a success, with the dining hall and Alumni End looking especially nice. A professional floor cleaner came in before the Carmalt wedding, and the floor of Alumni End shines. The compass has never been so bright. We are also steadily working on cleaning up Winlock House.
